In some cases major differences appeared between the periods for which particular Colleges or individuals were appointed to serve and those which actually took place. Thus, the first High Authority of the ECSC was prolonged in the aftermath of the 1958 'coal crisis' because of disagreements between the governments (especially France) over the replacement of the College.
